Description
Kentucky Bluegrass Seed
Available in sizes 1kg, 2kg, 5kg (22kg available via special order)
APPEARANCE
(Poa pratensis) A fine-textured, rhizomatous cool-season grass ideal for premium lawns and
ornamental turf.
Kentucky Bluegrass forms a dense, dark green lawn with a fine to medium leaf blade and a soft, luxurious feel
underfoot. It spreads by underground rhizomes, allowing it to self-repair and slowly thicken over time.
Colour is typically a rich blue-green that holds up well in cooler months.
USES
Ideal for situations where appearance and recovery are key, such as:
• High-quality home lawns and display turf
• Well suited to open areas with decent sunlight
• Blended with fescue or ryegrass to improve repairability
• Lawns in cool climates
• Areas with regular irrigation and maintenance
SEEDING & PREPARATION
• Best sown into a finely prepared, weed-free surface
• Requires good soil contact and consistent moisture
• Takes longer to establish than ryegrass, but fills in with rhizome spread over time
MOWING
• Maintain at 25–50 mm depending on use and season.
• Can tolerate lower mowing heights with regular maintenance, making it suitable for ornamental or
manicured lawns.
• Avoid removing more than 1/3 of the leaf blade at any one time to reduce stress and maintain density.
Tip: Regular mowing encourages lateral tillering and helps Kentucky Bluegrass form a tighter sward over time.
SEEDING RATES
• Monoculture: 3–4 kg per 100 m²
• In Blends: 5–20% of total seed mix by weight is common
• Oversowing: 2.5–3.5 kg per 100 m²
GERMINATION TIMEFRAME
• Typically, 14–21 days (may be slower in cooler temperatures)
Tip: Ideal soil temperatures for germination are 15–25°C. Kentucky Bluegrass is slower to establish, so
avoid it as a solo species if fast cover is needed.
PERFORMANCE HIGHLIGHTS
• Self-repairing via rhizome growth
• Excellent winter colour and cold tolerance
• High visual appeal with fine texture and deep green hue
• Suits cool climates or irrigated lawns in warmer regions
• Moderate wear resistance with strong recovery if established
THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND
• Slow germination and establishment
• Not suited for dryland or low-maintenance lawns
• Needs consistent watering during hot periods
• Due to a finer leaf, it may struggle in heavy shade unless blended with more resilient species
EXPERT TIP:
Kentucky Bluegrass shines as the “finisher” in a blend - it adds colour, softness and self-repair. Use it with
faster starters like ryegrass or fescue to get the best of both worlds.
Please note: Seed cannot be sent to Western Australia, Tasmania, or Northern Territory due to Quarantine restrictions.
