APPEARANCE

Rhizomatous Tall Fescue (RTF). A premium, self-repairing cool-season grass with exceptional durability 
and drought tolerance.

Rhizomatous Tall Fescue (RTF) produces a lush, dark green lawn with a coarse to medium leaf blade and a dense, 
upright growth habit. Its broader leaf structure contributes to a visually thick, resilient surface, offering a more refined 
“turf-type” look compared to older fescue varieties.

USES

Perfect for lawns needing strength and repairability, including:
• Family homes with minor pet/child traffic
• Showcase front lawns
• Areas with cooler temperatures and higher rainfall (e.g. Adelaide Hills)
• Areas with sun/shade combinations

SEEDING & PREPARATION

• Requires a well-prepared, loose surface with good water retention
• Ensure excellent seed-to-soil contact, rake lightly and firm down
• Keep soil moist but not waterlogged for 3–4 weeks

GERMINATION TIMEFRAMES

• 7–14 days in ideal conditions (10–25°C)
Tip: RTF benefits from some deeper watering during establishment to promote the development of its deep roots and 
underground rhizomes.

SEEDING RATES

• New Lawn: 4–5 kg per 100 m²
• Oversowing: 2–2.5 kg per 100 m

PERFORMANCE HIGHLIGHTS

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND

Slightly coarser texture than rye or bluegrass
• Slower to spread than Couch or Kikuyu
• May struggle with extreme summer heat if not irrigated
• Requires more water than some other lawns

MOWING

• Maintain at 25–50 mm depending on use and season.
• Can tolerate lower mowing heights with regular maintenance, making it suitable for ornamental or 
manicured lawns.
• Avoid removing more than 1/3 of the leaf blade at any one time to reduce stress and maintain density.
Tip: In shaded areas, mow the grass slightly higher to leave more leaf surface. This helps maximise photosynthesis 
where sunlight is limited.
